Now, let’s take a closer look at the UPI Payment Gateway offerings PhonePe PG provides and how they can help grow your business.

Types Of UPI Payment Gateway Offerings By PhonePe PG

The offerings primarily fall into two categories:

  1. One-time payments: These are transactions in which the customer makes a single payment for a product or service. For example, a customer buys something from an online store and pays for it in one go using UPI.
  2. Recurring payments: These are payments that happen regularly, such as subscriptions or memberships. For example, when a customer subscribes to a recurring monthly service like a streaming platform or a gym membership, their payment is automatically deducted each month through UPI.

In both of these categories, the payment flow is always carried out through two methods: UPI Intent and UPI Collect.

1. Intent Flow

With UPI Intent, the customer initiates the payment process. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Customer is on the checkout page of an online store, ready to pay.

Step 2: They’re redirected to the UPI app of their choice.

Step 3: In the app, they review the payment details and approve the payment with their MPIN.

Step 4: After the payment is done, they’re sent back to the online store with a confirmation message.

2. Collect Flow

In the Collect method, the merchant (the business) triggers the payment request. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: The customer enters their UPI ID on the checkout page.

Step 2: Once they enter their UPI ID, the merchant’s app or website sends a payment request to the UPI app of their choice.

Step 3: Customer then approves the request by entering MPIN on their UPI app.

Step 4: After completing the payment, the customer is redirected to the merchant’s website or app to confirm the payment has been processed.

Under One-Time payments, PhonePe PG has three main offerings:

1. Standard Checkout:

A pre-built, ready-to-use solution that allows businesses to quickly integrate payments with minimal effort. Businesses can customize it with their logo, payment method preferences, and branding while ensuring a seamless customer experience.

2. Custom Checkout:

Designed for businesses that want full control over the checkout experience, this solution enables deep integration within the app or website, ensuring a branded, embedded payment flow without external redirections.

Here’s how they work:

  • Businesses can configure their checkout page to match their brand identity by adding a logo, selecting payment methods, and adjusting the layout. They also have the flexibility to design a fully customized interface if needed.
  • Customers visit the checkout page and choose their preferred payment method, such as UPI, credit/debit cards, or other available options.
  • They enter their payment details and complete the transaction seamlessly.
  • Once the payment is processed, the customer receives a confirmation notification.

3. Payment Links:

UPI Payment Links make collecting payments from your customers super easy and simple.  Here’s how it works:

Step 1: You as the merchant generate a payment link with the required amount and send it to your customer via SMS, WhatsApp, or email.

Step 2: The customer clicks on the link and is taken to a payment page where they enter their UPI ID after choosing their preferred payment mode as UPI.

Step 3: The customer approves the payment request on their UPI app by entering their MPIN.

Step 4: Customer receives a successful payment notification confirming the transaction has been processed.

Under Recurring Payments, there is:

1. UPI AutoPay:

With UPI AutoPay, a merchant can easily accept recurring payments for subscription-based services. No more reminding customers of monthly payments; it’s all automated!  Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Businesses define a subscription plan and send an AutoPay request to the customer.

Step 2: The customer links their UPI ID and approves the mandate, authorizing future payments.

Step 3: Customers then see both the maximum mandate amount (approved limit) and the current payable amount, ensuring transparency.

Step 4: On the scheduled date, the payment is automatically deducted from the customer’s linked bank account.

Make sure to choose the solution that best fits your business type the best. Once you’ve made your choice, here’s how you can easily integrate it into your website or app.

How To Integrate A UPI Payment Gateway For Your Business

1. Pick a Payment Gateway

The first thing you need to do is choose a payment service provider that helps your business accept UPI payments. These payment service providers are called “payment gateways,” and they make the process simple.

2. Create a Merchant Account

After picking your gateway provider, you’ll need to sign up for a merchant account. This is where you’ll receive payments from your customers. To do this, you’ll need to provide details about your business, like your GST number, submit copies of your business licenses and bank account information.

3. Get Your API Keys

Once you have your merchant account, the payment gateway will give you API keys. These keys are like passwords that let your website or app connect to their payment system. You’ll use these keys when setting up the payment system on your site.

4. Choose How to Integrate

There are a few different ways to add UPI payments to your business:

  • API Integration: If you have a developer or are tech-savvy, you can directly integrate your website with the payment provider’s system using an API. Alternatively, you can refer to the Dev Docs for detailed instructions on how to set up the integration.
  • SDK Integration: Some payment providers give you an SDK, which is a simpler option. It’s like a kit with pre-built tools to make adding UPI payments easier.
  • Plugins: If you use platforms like WooCommerce, Shopify or OpenCart for your business, you can install a plugin that automatically sets up UPI payments for you.

5. Add UPI Payment Method

After setting up the payment system, you’ll add a UPI payment option to your checkout page. This option lets your customers choose UPI as their payment method. They’ll either type in their UPI ID or scan a QR code to complete the payment.

6. Test It First

Before you start accepting payments, you should test everything to make sure it works smoothly. Most payment gateways provide a “test” environment where you can try out the system without using real money. This helps you make sure everything is set up correctly.

7. Go Live

Once testing is done, you can start accepting payments. Make sure your website is secure with an SSL certificate (this keeps customer information safe) before you go live.

8. Monitor Payments

After you start accepting UPI payments, you’ll want to check that payments are going through smoothly, and if there are any issues, fix them quickly to avoid problems for your customers.

It’s really that simple. UPI Payment Gateways can improve payment reliability, increase customer satisfaction, and help your business grow all by choosing the right payment gateway.

Take PhonePe, for example. It has been facilitating UPI payments from the start. With millions of users and partnerships with banks and merchants, it is a widely used platform for digital payments. PhonePe UPI Payment Gateway is built using PhonePe’s own tech stack, making it reliable for handling high transaction volumes smoothly.

With its established presence and increasing adoption, PhonePe UPI Payment Gateway is designed to support businesses as they scale. It provides a simple, secure, and efficient payment solution, allowing businesses to focus on serving customers and expanding their operations.
