Modern technology has undoubtedly enhanced the quality of our lives, but at the same time, has led to manifold problems including the problem of massive amounts of electronic waste. Such waste poses a serious threat to human health and environment. The proper management of such hazardous e-waste is therefore critical to the protection of livelihood, health and environment.
To deal with this ever-rising problem of E-Waste, the Government of India, through its Ministry of Environment and Forest, formulated the E-Waste (Management and Handling) Rules in 2016.

The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 defines “solid wastes” under Rule 2(46) as
“solid waste” means and includes solid or semi-solid domestic waste, sanitary waste, commercial waste, institutional waste, catering and market waste and other non residential wastes, street sweepings, silt removed or collected from the surface drains, horticulture waste, agriculture and dairy waste, treated bio-medical waste excluding industrial waste, bio-medical waste and e-waste, battery waste, radio-active waste generated in the area under the local authorities and other entities mentioned in rule 2.
The E-Waste Management Rules, 2016 defines “e-waste” under Rule 3 (r) as
“e-waste” means electrical and electronic equipment, including solar photo-voltaic modules or panels or cells, whole or in part discarded as waste, as well as rejects from manufacturing, refurbishment and repair processes.
‘The E-Waste Management Rules, 2022 defines “electrical and electronic equipment” under Rule 3(j) as
“electrical and electronic equipment’ means equipment which are dependent on electric current or electro-magnetic field in order to become functional and also the equipment for the generation, transfer and measurements of the electricity.
